Starting Over –
A Whole House Rebuild with a Happy Ending
This project was completed by our Custom Homes & Remodeling team and is located in Hummelstown, PA. Not every home remodel starts for happy reasons, and this is one of those stories. Fortunately, we’re in the business of Building One Story at a Time – and this one has a happy ending.
Background
Homeowners Scott & Elizabeth Rhoads contacted our team in August of 2019 after a fire devastated their home while they were on vacation (a laptop chord sparked a fire in their home office). The fire department was able to save the majority of the structure, but the smoke and water damage affected the entire home – resulting in the entire interior to be rebuilt.
The Rhoads’s original home was built by EGStoltzfus in 2006. It was our single-story Wellington model. Following the 2019 fire, our team was able to meet with the homeowners onsite with their original floor plan, review the fire damage, and come up with a plan for the rebuild.
Plan
Although the Rhoads loved their original home, their family structure had evolved since 2006. So they used the home rebuild as an opportunity to make some changes to the floor plan to better meet their present-day lifestyle.
Using our Design-Build evaluation process, our team identified the original design plan elements that could be improved upon and tailored the new home plan accordingly.
One of the biggest changes included a larger kitchen area, which opened to the family room. The kitchen was carefully designed to ensure functionality and was brightened up with painted cabinets, quartz countertops, undercabinet lighting, and floating kitchen shelves.
Additional features of the home rebuild included:
- Updated flooring and additional lighting throughout the home
- Modern linear fireplace
- Custom trim in living room – shiplap, floating shelves, fireplace built-ins
- Murphy Door from hallway to main closet
- Relocation of the laundry/mudroom and powder room/half-bath
- Large walk-in shower, heated tile floors, and vanity with seating in owner’s bathroom
- Redesigned bedroom entryways for increased privacy
- EzeBreeze 3-season sunroom
Client Feedback
The positivity expressed by the Rhoads, along with a compassionate and talented design-build team that came together to help a family in need, resulted in a home that is better than what was lost – and allowed the family to start fresh in a home they truly love. Our team appreciated the opportunity to be a part of this project and maintains a close connection with the homeowners to this day.
