A 1990s Kitchen Makeover

This EGS Remodeling project is located in Manheim Township, PA. It features a kitchen remodel and family room updates. The work completed includes an open floor plan, custom-built wet bar, kitchen island install, new hardwood floors and fireplace renovation.

Background
This 1990s-built Manheim Township home needed a bit of a makeover. The homeowners were looking to renovate the kitchen and family room area, which was divided by an awkward half-wall that obstructed the view between rooms and made it challenging to arrange furniture. Our remodeling team was tasked with creating a more open flow between rooms, with a fresh and modern-day look.

Remodel Plan
The first design element we addressed was removing the half-wall that separated the kitchen/family room space. Because the wall supported the home’s second floor, replacement support was needed. Two columns with broad-sweeping arches were built to complement the style of the covered patio and other windows in the home.

Other improvements included an updated fireplace that accommodated a new, large flat-screen TV, and a custom-built wet bar area that connects the family room to the kitchen.

The kitchen area received a complete makeover. Old kitchen tile and family room carpet were replaced with Brazilian Cherry hardwood floors. The wood matched the client’s natural cherry kitchen cabinets, which they wanted to keep. Custom cabinetry for the new wet bar also tied in with the timeless cherry look.

A new kitchen island was also installed and finished in a complementary color, and a built-in desk area (a very popular option in 1990s new home construction) was replaced with wide-drawer cabinets for extra storage space.

Client Feedback
Our client was very happy to see their home refreshed with a functional, open floor plan that was much more conducive to the conversational environment they were looking for. In fact, EGS was hired again just a few years later to renovate their master bathroom. Read more about that project here.
